The Ft. Lauderdale airport consists of four air terminals. Terminal 1 or The New Terminal is also called the Yellow Terminal. Planned by Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum, and Cartaya Associates, Terminal 1 opened its ways in 2001 and 2003.

The Terminal 2 or Red Terminal, Terminal 3 or Purple Terminal, Terminal 4 or Green Terminal were all developed in 1986 and planned by Reynolds, Smith & Hills as a major aspect of a $263 million development project.

FLL reported that Terminal 1 or "The New Terminal" went through a $300-million makeover, development started in late 2015 and was finished in June 2017.
